Joseph returns to Lyric Opera of Chicago for Verdi’s ‘La traviata’

11th November 2013

November finds Joseph Calleja back in Chicago where he stars as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata at the city’s famed Lyric Opera. Having appeared with the company earlier this year opposite Anna Netrebko in Puccini’s La bohème, the Maltese tenor now joins soprano Marina Rebeka, making her Chicago debut in the title role, and baritone Quinn Kelsey as his father, Giorgio Germont. Arin Arbus’s new production is conducted by Massimo Zanetti.

Joseph was previously nominated for a Grammy Award for his portrayal of the naïve and lovesick Alfredo whose affair with a courtesan is cut short by his father’s interference and her fatal illness. “Joseph Calleja was the most endearing of Alfredos, singing with fresh, forthright,” wrote the Times of London of that performance, which was filmed at the Royal Opera House in 2009.
