Joseph is a “first-class Alfredo in every way” in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s ‘La traviata’

22nd November 2013

In his return to the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Joseph Calleja triumphs as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata. The Chicago Tribune dubbed the Maltese tenor “a handsome Alfredo whose easy outpouring of burnished tone and ardent manner were everything one looks for in the role of the naïve country boy who seeks true love in the fleshpots of the Parisian demimonde.”

The Chicago Classical Review had similar acclaim for Joseph’s account of Verdi’s lovesick hero, praising his “vibrant and impassioned performance in what is Lyric’s most vocally successful show so far this season.

“Joseph Calleja was a first-class Alfredo in every way,” the Review added. “His Brindisi was light and nimble, with his quick vibrato lending excitement. Calleja was aptly impassioned in the dramatic moments yet wonderfully nuanced in his vocalism, with artful dynamic shading and floating a honeyed legato in ‘Un di felice’ and ‘Parigi, o cara.’” La traviata continues at Lyric Opera of Chicago through December 20.
