Released 3rd January 2013
Decca is delighted to announce the release of ‘Quartet’, the original motion picture soundtrack to the music-themed directorial debut by Dustin Hoffman. ‘Quartet’, based on the play by Ronald Harwood, focuses around a community of ageing musicians and music and opera are central themes to the storyline. Decca advised the film’s producers on artists and repertoire from their operatic roster to be used in the film to ensure that any references to classical music within the film match the high production standards. The soundtrack to ‘Quartet’ features some of Decca’s best-known artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Dame Joan Sutherland, Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Sir Georg Solti. The additional original music is composed by Academy Award-winning composer, Dario Marianelli. ‘Quartet’ further adds to its musical authenticity by using current and former professional musicians for the on-screen performance scenes. This impressive line-up includes the central character of Anne Langley played by Dame Gwyneth Jones. Directed by Dustin Hoffman and based on the play by Ronald Harwood. The film stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Billy Connolly as retired Opera singers who annually put on a concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday. The arrival of the fourth member of the quartet, Jean (Smith) disrupts the equilibrium. This results in old rivalries and theatrical temperaments and it becomes unclear if the show will or will not go on.
